Actor David Spade has opened up about how he once ‘refused’ to switch roles with David Bowie during a 1991 episode of Saturday Night Live, (SNL).
The movie star opened up about the encounter on his podcast, Fly On The Wall, and the awkward phone call that came from Bowie, who wanted to switch to the “funnier” role.

Speaking in the podcast, Spade recalls the episode, in which he cast himself as a receptionist who “stops you because he thinks they’re better than you,” while Bowie was set to play himself.
After pitching the hilarious segment, the Grown Ups actor arrived to work the next day with a note, telling him to call Bowie.
The Hollywood actor then revealed that Bowie called the sketch “so f- – -ing funny. This is exactly my life and these people I see,” he said. However, his one request was to play the receptionist as “that was the funnier part.”
In the podcast, Spade revealed that the Ziggy Stardust singer pointed out that playing himself was “boring” as “everyone’s seen that”.
The two are said to have gone back and forth, however, Spade adamantly said no, as he wanted to make the role a recurring character, despite Bowie saying it may not even make it on the show.
Despite the actor thinking that was “so true,” he still refused to back down. Importantly, he pointed out the music star was never rude, and the skit never did make it on.

David Spade, a well-known actor, stand-up comedian, writer, producer, and television host was a writer and cast member on NBC’s SNL from 1996 – 1996, and as seen above, has many stories to tell from his five years on the TV show.
