Paul McCartney on whether Yoko Ono 'broke up the Beatles' in his own words

Sir Paul McCartney has spoken out on his podcast, McCartney: A Life in Lyrics, about whether Yoko Ono, the wife of his late bandmate John Lennon, caused The Beatles to disband.

Getting candid about The Beatles dynamic at the time of John Lennon and Yoko’s blossoming romance (and the recording of the iconic self-titled record in 1968) he described the 90-year-old as an “interference in the workplace.” Music fans across the world have been on either side of the date. Some believe the singer encouraged the celebrity to leave the iconic group. While others are more on the wavelength that it was John’s decision.

Yoko Ono was “something you had to deal with” says Paul McCartney

Paul explained: “We had a way we worked. The four of us worked with George Martin, an engineer, and that was basically it. And we’d always done it like that.

“The idea [of] that was if John wanted this to happen, then it should happen, and there’s no reason why not. … We would allow this and not make a fuss. And yet, at the same time, I don’t think any of us particularly liked it.”

He also added that he and his fellow Beatles, George Harrison and Ringo Starr “were not very confrontational”. He said they put up with the singer and activist for “the idea of the Beatles” and the fact that they had work to get done.

“This was our job,” Paul went on. “This is what we did in life. We were the Beatles. That meant if we didn’t tour, we recorded. And that meant if we recorded, we wrote.”

Yono wasn’t the only factor in The Beatles split

But Paul has never believed Yoko Ono was the sole decision for the breakup of the band.

He stated that despite them not liking her presence, she wasn’t the main reason the band ceased being, but that it was a “period of change” which involved John and Yoko’s relationship.

“It was a period of change because John and Yoko had got together, and that was bound to have an effect on the dynamics of the group.”

“A wonderful friend” – Paul pays tribute to John

The music legend recently paid tribute to his friend, who would have turned 83 on October 9.

Sharing a black-and-white picture of himself performing onstage as a smiling John watched on to his Instagram, he penned: “Celebrating the birthday of my wonderful friend and collaborator, @johnlennon – Paul.”

John was murdered at the age of 40 in 1980 after being shot outside a hotel in New York called The Dakota by Mark David Chapman. The American was obsessed with the musician and has spent 40 years in prison for his crime.
